A campsite doesn't get you Half Dome. A shuttle ticket isn't a vehicle pass. Each has its own rules and dates. None substitutes for another.
Yosemite and Glacier National Park Reservations for 2026
Neither park requires a timed-entry vehicle reservation for 2026. Yosemite's summer weekend/holiday system (2022-2024) is done. Glacier's system for Going-to-the-Sun Road, Many Glacier, and North Fork (2021-2024, paused in 2025) is also gone.

With no vehicle reservation needed, your focus shifts to four systems: campgrounds, Half Dome permits, wilderness permits, and lodging. Each runs on its own schedule. Booking one doesn't help you with the others.
Campground Reservations
All 13 Yosemite campgrounds need advance reservations roughly from April to October. Sites drop on Recreation.gov at 7:00 AM Pacific Time, but release windows are staggered: some pop up five months early, others just 14 or 7 days out.

Sleeping in your car outside a registered site is illegal in Yosemite. Waking up early won't replace a reservation.
Half Dome Permits
You need a permit to climb Half Dome whenever the cables are up, usually late May to early October. The 2026 cable-up dates aren't set yet. Only about 300 people get the green light each day: roughly 225 day hikers and 75 backpackers.
There are two lotteries. The preseason lottery runs all March 2026 on Recreation.gov. It costs $10 to apply, plus $10 per person if you win. The daily lottery opens two days before a hike date (apply Monday for a Wednesday hike) and closes at 7:00 PM Pacific the night before. Same fees.

Planning an overnight backpacking trip? You need a wilderness permit. Most reservable slots open about 22 weeks before your start date on Recreation.gov. A second batch opens 7 days before you go. These are separate from the Half Dome system: if you're backpacking to the cables, you need both permits.
Lodging
The Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, Curry Village: all the in-park lodging is run by the park's concessioner. These rooms book 13 to 14 months ahead. Summer 2026 rooms were likely bookable starting in summer 2025. Cancellations happen. Checking the concessioner's site early in the morning is your best bet for snatching one. A lodging reservation does not count as a Half Dome or wilderness permit.
Horsetail Fall ("Firefall")
That mid-February event where sunset makes Horsetail Fall glow orange draws massive crowds. In past years, Yosemite used separate peak-hours vehicle reservations on February weekends just for Firefall. With the general system gone for 2026, it's unclear if Firefall rules still apply. What You Actually Need to Book at Glacier
Glacier's big 2026 change is a reservation-only shuttle to Logan Pass: it's brand new. Campgrounds and wilderness permits are still the main bottlenecks. Even without a formal vehicle reservation system, park rangers can still shut down access to areas when parking fills.

You don't need a shuttle ticket to drive to Logan Pass. But that parking lot fills shockingly early in summer, often before 8 AM in July and August, and they enforce the three-hour limit. If you can't get a shuttle ticket, your backup is driving up before the lot fills and sticking to the time cap.
Campground Reservations
Most Glacier campgrounds need advance bookings on Recreation.gov with a rolling 6-month release. Some sites are held back until about 4 days before you arrive. Two Medicine Campground is closed all of 2026 for construction — don't count on it.
Cell and internet service in Glacier are spotty at best. Book everything before you enter the park. Campgrounds on the east side that used to be first-come, first-served have been switching to reservations. Check Recreation.gov for the current status — don't assume you can walk up.
Wilderness Camping
About 70% of Glacier's backcountry campsites open for advance reservations. The general sale for the remaining spots opened May 1, 2026, at 8:00 AM Mountain Time on Recreation.gov. Lodging
In-park lodging at Many Glacier, Lake McDonald Lodge, Rising Sun, and Apgar Village, plus the Red Bus Tours, is run by the park's concessioner. These open about 13 months ahead at 8:00 AM Mountain Time. Summer 2026 was likely bookable in summer 2025. These are some of the hardest reservations to get at either park — Many Glacier Hotel rooms can sell out in hours.
Temporary Area Restrictions
Even without a vehicle reservation system, the NPS can temporarily block access to areas (like the Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor, Many Glacier, and North Fork) when parking or roads get too full. Booking Strategy
- Set up your Recreation.gov account now. Save your payment info. Log in at least five minutes before any release — virtual queues start early, and seconds count.
- Book lodging first. In-park lodging at both parks opens 13-14 months out and is the toughest reservation to land.
- Reserve campgrounds on the exact release date at the exact time. The five-month-window sites (Upper Pines, Lower Pines, North Pines, Wawona, Hodgdon Meadow) are gone in minutes.
- For Glacier, target the 60-day shuttle release on May 2 at 8:00 AM Mountain Time. The next-day release at 7:00 PM MT is your backup plan.
- Apply for the Half Dome preseason lottery throughout March. The daily lottery is your backup for each day of your trip.
- Apply for wilderness permits at the earliest window — 22 weeks out for Yosemite, general sale May 1 for Glacier.
- Watch the time zones. Yosemite releases at 7:00 AM Pacific. Glacier releases at 8:00 AM Mountain (next-day shuttles at 7:00 PM Mountain).
- Check for cancellations often. Early morning is prime time — people cancel the night before, and spots reappear.

Who Should NOT Rely on This Guide
This guide is for the 2026 summer season using Recreation.gov. It's not for you if:
